Banker (Banking)
No notes
The banking firm of Berwick Lechmere first appears in the London Gazette in 1844. The father-in-law of Sir Anthony Lechmere (q.v.) was Joseph Berwick, and the banking partnership relates to the two families. The firm is a predecessor of Lloyds Banking Group. Joseph Berwick founded Berwick & Co, known also as the Worcester Old Bank, in 1772 and Lechmere, a partner in Berwick & Co. from c. 1800, apparently merged his family bank of Lechmere & Co. with it in 1831.
Joseph Berwick had been in a separate partnership with Henry Wakeman, Thomas Farley and Jacob Turner under the firm of Berwick, Wakeman, Farley and Turner of Kidderminster, bankers until his departure from the partnership in 1794.
