Roxburghe Club Member

The Roxburghe Club was founded in 1812 and is the oldest society of bibliophiles in the world. Its membership is limited to 40, chosen from among those with distinguished libraries or collections, or with a scholarly interest in books.

Notes

The Roxburghe Club, had its first anniversary dinner on 17/06/1813. Among the earliest members were the London West India merchant Robert Lang (member 1812-1828) (q.v. under Maria Lang and Charles Porcher Lang), the secretary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel James Heywood Markland (member 1812-1845) (q.v.), George Hibbert (member 1816-1837) (q.v.), and George Watson Taylor (member 1822-1841) (q.v.).
