Portrait of Charles Tudway MP by Thomas Gainsborough

Portrait by Thomas Gainsborough 1765, now at the Courtauld Gallery, London. 'Charles Tudway (1713-1774) was Member of Parliament for Wells, in Somerset, before retiring in 1761 in favour of his son. His pose is carefully studied to convey his status as a landed gentleman. It follows the recommendations outlined in contemporary manuals of proper conduct to suggest ease, elegance and authority. Gainsborough painted a companion piece representing Tudway’s wife, now in the Baltimore Museum of Art. (Permanent collection label)'
