Macfarlane Observatory

The first observatory in Glasgow, founded in 1757 and named in honour of Alexander Macfarlane. 'He was one of the best mathematicians of the age, and a Fellow of the Royal Society. By his will he left to the University of Glasgow, where he was educated, his valuable apparatus of astronomical instruments; and the Observatory, which was shortly erected by the University on Dovehill [Dowhill], was, as a tribute of honour to his memory for this benfaction, named the MacFarlane Observatory.'
