Paintings

Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson by Joshua Reynolds. The painting was recorded as that undertaken for Mrs Thrale, in the 1823 Christie sale of George Watson Taylor's work, 'subsequently in the Peel collection, and now in the National Gallery.' The painting now held by the National Portrait Gallery NPG 1597, which shows it as an anonymous gift in 1911, is described as having been sold in 1825 'on Boswell's death.'
