Portrati of Lady Louisa Lascelles by Thomas Lawrence

LASCELLES, Lady Louisa (1812-1886). 4th daughter of 2nd Earl of Harewood. She m. Lord George Henry Cavendish, M.P., 1835. ? c. 1829. 23! X 19I, oval, unfinished. Head only, looking r. ; hair bound high with ribbon, open frilled collar. Harewood House . Earl of Harewood. Lady Louisa could not have sat to Lawrence much before 1829, when she was seventeen. This sitter could well be older, and both the style of dress and the manner of painting suggest a date a good deal earlier than 1829. Is she in fact Henrietta, Countess of Harewood whose portrait 'begun 25 or 30 yrs' earlier was claimed from Lawrence's executors but not found (Appendix IV, 8)? In this case it is probably the same as lot 125, 'Lady the head nearly finished,' Christie, 25 June, 1831 (125), bt. Earl of Harewood. Exh. Brighton, 1951 (11). Lit. T. Borenius, Catalogue of Paintings and Drawings at Harewood House, 1936, p. 152, rep. pl. Iii; K. Garlick, Notes on Sir Thomas Lawrence m The Burlington Magazine, August, 195 1, p. 250; Garlick, p. 45. Repetition 19 X 14. Called Miss Farren. Port Sunlight. Lady Lever Art Gallery. T.J. Barrett, Christie, 11/12 May, 1916 (70), bt. Agnew. Exh. Birmingham, Portrait Exhibition, 1900 (9) ; Brighton, 195 1 (12). Lit. Magazine of Art, xviii, 1898, p. 265, rep. ; Garlick, p. 45.
