This brought together his own life's work up to this point and co-ordinated it with that of European geologists. It was a great success, translated into several languages and used as a textbook.

The Buff Bay plantation was a sugar estate next to the Buff Bay River, south of Charlestown in Jamaica. By 1839, the estate was 840 acres.
