Several of his grandchildren had wider imperial connections: William (1823-1899, son of Queely's son John Shiell) emigrated to Australia in the 1850s and died in Sydney 1899; Louisa Gordon (1838-?, daughter of Queely's son John Shiell) married the colonial administrator Sir Stephen John Hill (1809-1891), who was Lieutenant-Governor of Sierra Leone 1854-1860, Governor-in-Chief of Sierra Leone 1860-1862, Governor-in-Chief of the Leeward and Caribee Islands 1863-1869 and Governor of Newfoundland 1869-1876; Henry, son of James Phipps Shiell, died in Sydney, Australia, 30/01/1889.
