Synopsis

Notes

Trial of Edward Hill, page 1 of 2. Edward Hill from Great Valley was one of 60 people in Hanover tried by Court Martial for sedition in late January and early February 1832 following Sam Sharpe's War. They all pled not-guilty. 58 were found guilty, 2 were acquitted. Of those found guilty, 36, including Edward Hill, were sentenced to death (6 of these later had their sentences commuted to 50 or more lashes). Most of the trials were very short, without recorded cross-questioning and with no witnesses speaking in defence.
