Sam James Roper from Great Valley was one of 60 people in Hanover tried by Court Martial for sedition in late January and early February 1832 following Sam Sharpe's War. They all pled not-guilty. 58 were found guilty, 2 were acquitted. Of those found guilty, 36, including Sam James Roper, were sentenced to death (6 of these later had their sentences commuted to 50 or more lashes). Most of the trials were very short with no recorded cross-questioning and no witnesses giving evidence in defence of the accused. Daughter of "free Mulatto" lodging-house-keeper Jane Charlotte Beckford (c. 1759-1825); possibly the daughter of George Ffrench, Clerk to the Jamaica Assembly. Spinster; independently wealthy slave-owner.
