One of the remaindermen under the will of George Metcalfe (q.v.), and probably the Robert Atkinson 'now living in Richmond' [presumably Yorkshire] who was named in the will as one of the 3 tenants in common of George Metcalfe's estate to succeed on his wife's death. It was a condition of inheritance that Robert Atkinson and his co-legatee Thomas Davis took the name Metcalfe. Robert Metcalfe Atkinson does not change his name if his is correctly identified that puts his inheritance under question. There are other Atkinsons named in the will: it is likely that Robert was related to them, and possible that they were part of an illegitmate family.
Robert Metcalfe Atkinson, son of Edmund and Nanny or Agnes Atkinson of Gayle was baptised 26/12/1802 at Hawes, Yorkshire.
Robert Metcalfe Atkinson of St Mary Newington married Mary Clare of this parish 03/09/1829 at St John Clerkenwell. Second marriage registered for Robert Metcalfe Atkinson at St George Hanover Sq. Q2 1879.
In 1851 Robert M. Atkinson 'floor cloth manufacturer' aged 48 born Aysgarth Yorkshire was living at 26 Compton Street Islington with his wife Mary 43 and unmarried sister-in-law Ann Clare 39. 1861 again as 'floor cloth manufacturer aged 58 living with Mary at Buda [?] Lodge, Chislehurst Road Streatham. 1871 Robert M. Atkinson aged 68 born Aysgarth Yorkshire 'retired manufacturer' was living at 12 Chislehurst Road Streatham with wife Mary aged 63. In 1881 Robert M Atkinson aged 78 born Hawes Yorkshire 'income from land dividends interest' living at 6 St Germans Place with wife Annie [sic] D. Atkinson aged 42
Will of Robert Metcalfe Atkinson of 6 St Germans Place Blackheath who died 31/12/1886 at 6 St Germans Place proved 14/02/1887 by Anna Day Atkinson widow the relict and Rev Albert Brook Webb of Sevenoaks two of the executors, personal estate £27,863 17s 5d. Robert Metcalfe Atkinson of St Germans Place Blackheath buried South Metropolitan Cemetery (now known as West Norwood Cemetery) Lambeth 05/01/1887 aged 84.
Edmund Atkinson had a daughter Peggy Atkinson, baptised 05/04/1776 in Askrigg, daughter of Edmund, married Thomas Coats 14/12/1805 in Hawes (she was 'of Gayle'). The Margaret Coats named in George Atkinson's will is presumably Peggy or a daughter. Peggy Atkinson may be the sister of Robert Metcalfe Atkinson or conceivably an aunt.

Will dated 30 September 1886 of Robert Metcalfe Atkinson late of No. 6 St Germaine Place Blackheath who died 31/12 last. Testator gives £1500 upon trust to maintain a market-house, reading-rooms, library, offices and refreshment rooms in the township of Hawes, in the parish of Aysgarth Yorks., on a site which he expects will be provided. If a site is not provided within 3 years, or if any intoxicating liquors are sold, the money is to be held upon trust for his wife; £200 to the ministers and wardens of Hawes upon trust for investment and to apply the income to the purchase of blankets and warm clothing, to be distributed on December 2 each year to the poor aged 60 and upwards; £200 each to the Bible Society, the Church Pastoral Aid Society, the Church Missionary Society, the Society for Promoting Female Education in the East, the Irish Church Missions for the South of Ireland, and the London City Mission; his horses, carriages, furniture and effects and £300 to his wife; £6000 upon trust for his wife for life and then as she shall appoint.
