Biography

Jamaican planter and returnee, deceased owner of Windsor estate in Westmoreland Jamaica, the compensation for which was paid to his executors Jesse Curling, Charles Armstrong and William Barth (each of whom q.v.). Samuel Jeffries had been attorney for Jesse Curling's father as mortgagee-in-possession in Jamaica in the 1780s.

  1. 'On the 19th inst., at his residence, Pixton house, East Grinstead, Sussex, in the 75th year of his age, Samuel Jeffries, Esq., many years a respected and esteemed inhabitant of the parish of W, IoJ.' Pickstone auctioned off by executors. Will of Samuel Jeffries of East Grinstead, Sussex proved 03/02/1820.

  2. The executors are identified as Jesse Curling of Bermondsey, Charles Armstrong of London, and William Barth of Great Yarmouth, merchants, in solicitors' papers in the East Sussex Archive.  

  3. Marriage at East Grinstead of Mr W. Bath [sic] of Yarmouth to Jane second daughter of Samuel Jeffries of Pickstone-hill Sussex 05/09/1811.

  4. Samuel Jeffries is shown as Cornet and Adjutant (1787) and Captain and Adjutant (1796) in the Westmoreland Horse Troop.

  5. William Barth of Yarmouth was a timber merchant and mayor of the town in 1824, 1826 and 1836, subsequently with a position in the Post Office, dying in London 1850.
