Biography

Tenant-for-life of Byde Mill House estate in Barbados, who admitted the counter-claim of his four daughters as remaindermen.  His daughters were Frances Layton, Maria Charlotte Sperling, Sophia Lucy Marriott and Mary Ann Walton (all of whom q.v.).

  1. Ellys Anderson Stephens had inherited property from his mother Frances Elizabeth Stephens, niece of Sir Stephen Anderson of Eyeworth, but it appears that Byde Mill passed first to Sir Stephen Anderson's widow and then to Ellys Anderson Stephens and his children under entail.

  2. Ellys Anderson Stephens married 29/02/1792 Miss Mary Elton at Stapleton House Bristol. Will of Ellys Anderson Stephens of Fulham Middlesex proved 15/03/1845.

  3. Although Ellys Anderson refers to 'four daughters' and these are identifiable in the slave compensation records as the four above, a Fanny Jane Stephens spinster daughter of Ellys Anderson Stephens was married 08/05/1852 to Lewis Peter Baccelli, 'Professor of Languages' at St Pancras. Although only baptised 06/08/1845 at St Mary Newington, a note on the register says that Fanny Jane, daughter of Ellys Anderson Stephens and Ann Bull, was born 23/05/1817. Her baptism followed her father's death.
