Biography

Son of Thomas Breakenridge (q.v.), from whose Philip's Valley estate he received a £50 pa annuity, Peter Breakenridge unsucessfully claimed compensation as executor of his father (Port Royal claim no. 72) and guardian to the children of William Breakenridge (Port Royal claim no. 71.) The compensation in each case was awarded to Charles Harvey as representative of his father's family who were still based in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. He was awarded compensation for ownership of enslaved persons (presumably in his own name) for Port Royal claim no. 73.

  1. His father was presumably the same Thomas Breakenridge who was christened 25/03/1778 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland, son of John Breakenridge and his wife Mary Langwill, as this would make him the brother of Isabella and Mary Breakenridge (both q.v.), who were the beneficiaries of his estate, and also the brother of William Breakenridge (q.v.) for whose children his son Peter Breakenridge claims as guardian.

  2. Not to be confused with his uncle, also called Peter Breakenridge, brother of Isabella, William and Mary, son of John Breakenridge and Mary Langwill, who was christened 02/08/1786 in Campbeltown, Argyll and died in infancy.

  3. Assumed to be resident in Jamaica and managing the family holdings as he is listed as proprietor of Philip's Valley between 1826 and 1833. Peter Breakenridge registered 23 enslaved persons in 1833 as guardian of the estate of William Breakenridge.
