Biography

Nee Rachel Allen Jarrett, daughter of Herbert Newton Jarrett II (1724-90), widow of William Rhodes James (1755-95), and mother of William Rhodes James (1786-1842) and Herbert Jarrett James (1789-1840), both of whom q.v.

  1. Born 08/05/1769 in Orange Valley. Married 18/08/1785 William Rhodes James, son of William Rhodes James of Southfield Estate Trelawny.  'Mrs James resided for many years in Montego Bay...[About] the year 1845 she came to Scotland, and visited her nephew William Mitchell Kerr, at Kersfield in Peebleshire...she resided for some years at the Hot Wells Bristol and eventually came to Bath, where she died at 10 Seymour Street' on 16/11/1856. A great-grandson was M[ontague] R[hodes] James OM, the writer of ghost stories and Provost of Eton (after 1918) and King's (1905-1918).

  2. The 1851 census shows Rachel James aged 82 annuitant born Jamaica lving at 11 Seymour Street Bath. Death of Rachel Allen James registered Q4 1856 at Bath, Somerset.
