Biography

Resident slave-owner who died in Jamaica in Westmoreland 02/10/1855.

  1. John Russell Moore and Thomas Dale Tate was half-brother to John Russell Moore. Their mother, Rachel Russell (1755-1837), was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica. Both John Russell Moore and Thomas Dale Tate were born in Jamaica, along with other siblings.

  2. The family of Thomas Tate had apparently migrated to Jamaica from Billingham, Northumberland, sometime between 1789 and 1805. Thomas Tate (Sr.) and Mary Brown were married at Billingham 01/08/1784, and a Thomas Tate was baptised at Billingham in 1789 the son of Thomas and Mary Tate. The inventory of Thomas Tate (Sr.), who died in Westmoreland Jamaica in 1805, identifies Mary Brown Tate as his executrix: the inventory is for a modest amount, some £120, implying that it was Thomas Tate the son who accumulated meaningful property - including enslaved people - by the 1830s.

  3. An unsourced genealogical site gives him as Thomas Dale Tate, specifies his purchase of the Old Shafston estate in the 1830s from the Senior family [note the slave registers show the purchase in the 1820s from Robert Allwood], and details further purchases of estates in the 1830s and 1840s, bringing his holdings in Westmoreland to 11,000 acres by the time of his death in 1855. The same site gives his wife as Mary Ann Anglin (1804-1846), daughter of John Anglin. The couple had 7 sons and 3 daughters, of whom William Anglin Tate (1828-1898) inherited the renamed Tate Shafston estate, still in the Tate family today. In addition, Thomas Dale Tate reportedly fathered at least five further children in a relationship with Frances Eleanore Thomlinson.

  4. Thomas Dale Tate married Mary Ann Anglin 28/06/1826 in Westmoreland, Jamaica.
