London merchant and mortgagee of 'slave-property' in Jamaica.
Living at Forty Hill Enfield in 1841, aged 75 Independent. Will of William Linwood of Enfield proved 19/07/1848; sale of possessions by his executors 05/08/1848. He left £2000 in trust with the income to be split between his nephew Matthew Linwood and Matthew Linwood's wife Frances Giles Linwood; a further £2000 in trust for his niece Ann Elizabeth Palmer of Birmingham to determine the beneficiaries of the income; and £2000 in turn for a second niece Harriet Gilder. He left further legacies of £15,000 to family members. His residuary legatee was his nephew William Linwood of Colmore Terrace Birmingham with contingent remainder to William Linwood of Christchurch College, Susannah Miles and Agnes Aldridge.
William Linwood's sister Mary has an entry in the ODNB as 'artist in needlework', as does his great-nephew and contingent co-heir, who appears in his will as William Linwood of Christchurch, as 'classical scholar.'
