Biography

  1. Daughter of William Hewitt Esquire; inherited a share of Cumberland estate in Clarendon, Jamaica. Her parents married in Exeter, Devon, England, 27/08/1808. Elizabeth Mary, daughter of William Hewitt and Mary Stevens his wife (late Cornish spinster) was born 27/09/1809 and baptised 12/10/1809 in St Catherine, Jamaica.

  2. Elizabeth Mary Hewitt married Captain Dawson Mayne RN in Market Drayton, Shropshire, Q2 1840. They were living at Claremont Buildings, St Chad, Shrewsbury in the census of 1841, age 40 and 30, with three female and one male servants. Dawson Mayne was "Navy & Chief Constable of Rural Police", born in Ireland. They were at Frankwell, Shrewsbury in 1851 (he aged 50, she aged 41, with her place of birth given as Jamaica. They had two female and one male servants; and William H. Taylor, a 26 year old visitor, was in the household as well. Not located in 1861. They were at Norfolk Villa, Leamington, Warwickshire, in 1871 when Elizabeth's sister Frances was living with them.

  3. The will with two codicils of Elizabeth Mary Mayne late of 2 Clifton Terrace, Sidmouth, Devon, widow, who died 21/09/1875 at 2 Clifton Terrace was proved in London by Richard Charles Mayne of 80 Chester Square, Middlesex, C.B., a Captain in the Royal Navy, one of the executors. Effects under £3000.
