Biography

Partner in Paxton Cockerell & Traill and then in Sir Charles Cockerell & Co., recipient with his partners of slave compensation for several large awards in Mauritius. He appears to have been the man who died at Brighton in 1869 leaving £800.

  1. John Cockerell, born 10/10/1785, son of Samuel Pepys Cockerell Esquire of Paddington. Matriculated St John's College, Cambridge, 1803, BA 1808, MA 1811. Admitted to Lincoln's Inn 1805. Married Joanna Mary, daughter of Brig. Gen. Catlin Craufurd at St George's Hanover Square in 1829. Buried at Hove.

  2. Address given as Putney for the baptism of his sons Andrew Pepys (1830), John (1831) and Horace Abel (1833), of Tilney Street for the baptism of Anne Isabella in 1833 and Paddington for the baptism of Roland Vyner (1835) and Mary Therea (1836). Not found in the 1841 or 1851 censuses, although both sons were at school in England at the time.

  3. Living at 9 Adelaide Crescent, Brighton, in the census of 1861, age 73, born London, with his wife Joanna Mary, age 58, born Cape of Good Hope, daughter Mary Theresa age 24, and five female servants.

  4. Buried in St Andrew's Old Church, Hove (born 10/10/1785, died 28/04/1869), with his wife Joanna Mary (born 05/03/1801, died 16/03/1873).

  5. The will of John Cockerell late of 9 Adelaide Crescent, Brighton, Sussex, who died 28/04/1869 at 9 Adelaide Crescent was proved 13/11/1869 by the oath of Andrew Pepys Cockerell of 45 Hertford Street, Mayfair, Middlesex, gentleman, the son and one of the executors. Effects under £800.
