Biography

A minor at the time of Emancipation, Elizabeth Jane Lambie inherited land and enslaved persons in St Thomas-in-the-East, Jamaica from her father William Lambie (q.v.), an attorney and slave-owner who died in 1832. Her guardians were Henry Lord Garrigues and Patrick Charles Crichton (both q.v.).

Her mother was the daughter of Patrick Crichton of Gayfield Square, Edinburgh, and she died in childbirth in Jamaica 20/12/1821 at the age of 23, just one year after her marriage. Under the will of her father William Lambie, made in 1826 and for which Administration was granted in 1849 to Lambie's second wife Elizabeth Ann Lambie, Elizabeth Jane Lambie was residuary legatee after a £400 p.a. annuity to her stepmother.

Sarah Margaret Crichton was Elizabeth Jane Lambie’s aunt, described in a contemporary account by her brother Sir Archibald Crichton in 1860 as “living in the highest respectability in Edinburgh acting as a second mother to her orphan niece Elizabeth Jane Lambie.” This account also gives details of the life of Sir Alexander Crichton (q.v.), who was the brother of Elizabeth Jane’s grandfather Patrick.

  3. In 1851 she was at 4 South Nelson Street, Edinburgh with her aunt S.M. Crichton, age 54 and 1 female servant.
