Biography

Trustee of Harriet Elizabeth Gordon (q.v.), and as such counterclaimed with Hon Hugh Lindsay and Alexander Trotter (each of whom q.v.) for the bulk of the compensation for the enslaved people on the Elizabeth Anne estate in British Guiana. The claimants admitted Harriet Elizabeth Gordon's mortgage, and a settlement was clearly reached among claimants, although Elrington and his co-trustees were not formally awarded any compensation.

  1. Baptism of Thomas Gerard Elrington, son of Richard Goodall Elrington and his wife Hannah Brock in Ashford, Kent, 05/02/1801.

  2. Thomas Gerard Erlington was the first cousin of Adam Durnford Gordon (Harriet Elizabeth Gordon's husband). Adam's mother was Frances (bap. 1773), the sister of Richard Goodall Elrington. Not to be confused with another Thomas Gerard Elrington, the brother of Frances and Richard Goodall Elrington, who was baptised in 1764 and became a Major-General in the army; in his will, proved in 1815, he describes himself as of Enniskellin.

  3. Thomas Gerard Elrington and his wife Annabella had two sons baptised in Marylebone in 1821 - Richard John Crook (born 1818) and Henry Handley (born 1821). Thomas Gerard Elrington lived at 40 Upper Seymour Street, London, in 1833. In 1851 he lived at Weymouth Street, Portland Place, but was also listed as the owner of 2 Argyll Street in St James, Westminster. He has not been identified in any of the censuses but his widow Annabel may be the Annabel Elrington, age 70, living with her sister-in-law Eleanor Elrington and grandchildren Gerrard G., Hamilton, Claude and Frances S. Elrington at 18 Folkstone Road, Hougham. Dover, in 1871. Her place of birth is given as Nova Scotia.

  4. The will of Thomas Gerard Elrington formerly of Weymouth Street Portland Place a Lieutenant in HM's 62nd Foot who died 03/01/1859 at Clarens in Switzerland was proved 10/12/1863 by his relict Mary Anna Isabella [sic] of Brook Vale Cottage near Teignmouth, effect under £450.
