Biography

Counterclaimed with her sister Eliz[abeth] Crabb (q.v.) for the compensation for the enslaved people on Spring estate in Hanover Jamaica as annuitants. The compensation appears to have been paid into colonial court.

  1. Letter from Penelope Ballard (late Crabb) and Eliz. [probably Eleanor] Crabb, No. 6 or Augusta Place, Clapham Road, Surrey: annuity of £50 pa settled...during the lives of his wife Mary Ann Barrett [= Basnett] and her niece Miss Penelope Raggatt afterwards Mrs Crabb, Mary Ann Barrett [= Basnett] and Mrs Penelope Crabb were 'our deceased [great] aunt and mother': 'The payments were very irregularly made in some years altogether withheld, the last payment was about the years 1819 or 1820.'

  2. In 1841 Penelope Ballard aged 40 Ind and Eleanor Crabb aged 40 'Ind' were living at Augusta Place Kennington; in 1851 Penelope Ballard widow aged 60 'fundholder' born 'London City' was living at 16 Percy Place Kennington with sister Eleanor aged 50 also fundholder born 'London City'. The death of Penelope Ballard was registered at Lambeth Q1 1855. Burial of Penelope Ballard of Percy Place aged 71 at what is now the West Norwood Cemetery 22/02/1855.
