Biography

Of Arundel Street, Strand, London, and one of a group of claimants for slave compensation on Mount Pleasant, Antigua, under the will of Alexander Willock.

  1. John Pakenam, son of John Gilliam and Ellen Mary Stilwell of 22 Arundel Street, baptised in St Clement Danes, in 1832. Father's occupation Navy Agent. "Of Townfield, and Bregsells, Surrey, a Magistrate for Middlesex and Westminster, who d. 1886." Married to Ellen Mary, daughter of the late John Tingcombe Esquire of Hartley, Devon.

  2. Married Ellen Mary Tingcombe at St Alphege, Greenwich, in 1831. Living in Dorking, Surry, in the census of 1841, age 45, Navy Agent, with Ellen age 35, William age 35, John age 8, Henry age 6, Mary age 5, Ellen age 3, Grace age 1, 4 female and 1 male servants. Living at 22 Arundel Street in the census of 1851, age 57, Born St Clements Danes, Middlesex, Justice of the Peace for Middlesex and Navy Agent Westminster. In this same household were his wife Ellen M., sons John P. and Henry, daughters Mary J., Ellen L., Grace B., Martha and Frances, a cook, a housemaid, a footman, and Thomas Stilwell, "no family", age 53, also a navy agent. At the same address in 1861 with his wife and children Mary, Ellen, Frances, Martha, Catherine and Frances, and brother Thomas Stilwell, three male and 5 female servants. At 33 Gordon Square, St Pancras, in 1871 and the same address in 1881.

  3. The will with six codicils of John Gilliam Stilwell late of Dorking, Surrey, and of Arundel Street, Strand, and of 33 Gordon Square, who died 30/05/1886 at 33 Gordon Square was proved by John Pakenham Stilwell of 21 Great George Street, Westminster, the sole executor. Personal estate £72,030 1s 2d.
