Biography

Gibbes Walker Jordan (Barrister-at-Law, Colonial Agent for Barbados, c.1802-1823, and FRS); father of Joseph William Jordan (q.v.).

  1. Born 1757 in Barbados; died 16 February 1823, aged 66, Portland Place, London. Grandparents: Joseph Jordan of St George (1689-29 March 1752) aged 63; Elizabeth (1695-6 September 1761) aged 66. Parents: Dr Joseph Jordan (Surgeon) 1729–1792 and Alis Christian Walker 1731–1792. Two of his siblings predeceased him and their parents: William Walker Jordan (1758-31 December 1781), and Edward Jordan died (1761-15 August 1780). Married Amy North Pinder (1770–1825), 16 February 1786, St Michael, Barbados. Children: Gibbes Walker Jordan (1787–1788), Joseph William Jordan (Barrister-at-Law) (1789–1856), Christian Walker Jordan (8 December 1791-1827) and Ann Isaballa Jordan (1798–?) were born in Barbados. Gibbes Walker Jordan (Reverend, Rector of Woodstock, Oxon) (1800–1856), Jane Jordan (1801–1802) and William Walker Jordan (Barrister-at-Law) (2 March 1803–1846) were all born in London. The family returned to Barbados where John Jordan (Reverend Vicar of Enstone) (3 March 1804–1874) was born. They then returned again to London where three more children were born: Mary Jane Jordan (1 June 1805-1854); Francis Jordan (31 December 1806-1880) and Richard Jordan (5 May 1809-?).
    The following survived beyond their father’s death in 1823: Joseph William (1789–1856), Christian Walker (1791-1827), Ann Isabella (1798-?), Gibbes Walker (1800–1856), William Walker (1803–1846), John (1804–1874), Mary Jane (1805-1854) and Francis (1806-1880: Francis was a patient in an asylum at Brislington from at least 1835 until his death, when he left £14,000).

Colonial Agent for the Island of Barbados. F.R.S., 1800. Author, The Claims of the British W. India Colonists to the Right of Obtaining Supplies from America Stated and Vindicated. Died Feb. 16, 1823, aged 65, in Portland Place, London. Father of Joseph W. (1808), John (1823), Francis (1825), William W. (1821) and the next. (T. A. Walker, 339; Boase, Biblio. Last Will and Testament of Gibbes Walker Jordan of Portland Place, Middlesex.
Main elements:

To wife Amy North Jordan: house in Portland Place and all estate and interest; all my household goods and furniture, plate, wines and other household articles.
Monies bequeathed to her by her father and entitled to under her brother John and £200 due from her father’s estate and all other personal estate she is entitled to since marriage. Two annuities or half-yearly sums of £400 and £200 totalling £600. The annuity of £400 to be paid by their eldest son Joseph William Jordan or his heirs and assigns; to be payable out of plantations of Walkers, Burnt House and Grenade Hall, Barbados. The annuity of £200 to be paid by second son Gibbes Walker Jordan out of Welch Town, Barbados.

The provisions to his wife ‘in satisfaction of all . . . and of all claims by her under our marriage settlement’. £6,000 to be paid to each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th sons, William Walker, John, Francis: £6,000 to be paid at age of 25 with interest at rate of £4% p.a. until 22, at £5% p.a. until 25.

To daughter Christian Walker Rigaud £2,000. By a codicil the money to be paid to the trustees in her marriage settlement.
To second daughter Anne Isabella Jordan £3,000.
To third daughter Mary Jane Jordan £3,000.

The legacies to William Walker and John and to the three daughters to be paid by Joseph William Jordan (or heirs, executors, administrators or assigns) out of the plantations Walkers, Burnt House and Grenade Hall, Barbados. The legacy to Francis to be paid by Gibbes Walker Jordan.

Joseph William Jordan inherited Walkers, Burnt House and Grenade Hall. The last to be separated from Welch Town by the road passing between them. All land on the Grenade Hall side shall be considered as belonging to it; on the other side, Welch Town.

Gibbes Walker Jordan inherited Welch Town.

If any of the children die before reaching 25, the legacies due to them to be split equally between the others. Wife and five sons appointed joint executrix and executors of this last Will and Testament.

Dated 14 February 1823; probate date 7 May 1823.
