William James Stevenson

Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, either selling or losing control of the Beverley Settlement in Hanover c. 1823. William James Stevenson's son William, later Sir William Stevenson (1805-1863) was a colonial administrator and Governor of Mauritius 1857-1863.

  1. Will of William James Stevenson of Kingston Jamaica [made in 1823] proved 08/07/1831. In the will he said that he had made a little provision for his children by 'a gift of a few negroes' and by investing occasionally small sums in the 3% consols., and that he had made no provision for his wife nor had the means to do so, but left her all his [unspecified] property. By a codicil in 1827 he replaced the dead William Allen as executor with his son William Stevenson and with William Mitchell of 46 Lime Street. The will was attested in Jamaica in 1831.
