Charles Farquharson

Biography

  1. Son of Charles Farquharson MD (q.v.) and brother of Isabella, William and Matthew (each of whom q.v.), dying at Spanish Town in 1825.

  2. Possibly the Charles Farquharson of Jamaica who graduated MD from Edinburgh University in 1807. His children with wife Mary Ann, baptised in St Elizabeth, were: Charles Miller (baptised as an infant in July 1816); Frances Eliza (born 1816), Matthew Smith (1817) and Anna (1819), all baptised in 1819; William Fatham (baptised 1820); and Margaret Miller (baptised 1821).

  3. Described as the late Charles Farquharson esq of Perry, Perthshire, and Spring Vale, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, when his youngest daughter Margaret Miller married James Johnston esq of Newmill at Darliston Cottage, Elgin, 01/09/1842. According to her gravestone, Margaret Miller Farquharson Johnson was born in Jamaica, 04/06/1821. She was buried in Elgin Cathedral churchyard in 1901. According to her death certificate, her father was Charles Farquharson, doctor of medicine, and her mother was Mary Ann nee Neilson.

  4. Memorial inscription: To the memory of the Honorable Charles Farquharson, Custos Rotulorum, Member of the Honourable House of Assembly, and Lieutenant Colonel of Militia for the parish of St Elizabeth, and an Assistant Judge of the Cornwall Assize Court who died in Spanish Town during the Session of 1825, in the 38th year of his age. This monument was erected by his parishioners, as a testimonial of their high esteem for his private character and in approbation of his public conduct.
