Biography

Son of Francis Maitland and his wife Ann nee Wright. Inherited a share in Mitcham and Silver Grove estates in trust under the will of his grandfather Andrew Wright on the death of his mother Ann c. 1833. Baptised with three of his younger brothers at Giddy Hall in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, in 1814. Not identified in the British censuses. An unsourced family tree on Ancestry.com (by purplefrog505) gives his birth as 29/12/1811 at Giddy Hall, his marriage to Harriet Carpenter 22/02/1834 in Westminster, England, and his death 22/11/1842. The record for the marriage of Francis Maitland to Harriet Carpenter took place in St Mary Stratford Bow and gives both as "of this parish".

  1. Will of Francis Maitland master mariner of St Elizabeth proved 17/11/1843. In the will he left everything to his wife Harriet, including his interests in Giddy Hall, Mitcham and Silver Grove. The will was witnessed in 1842 and then attested in 1843 by Thomas Cooke shipping clerk of Liverpool.
