Biography

Owner of Mount Pleasant estate in St Elizabeth, Jamaica.

  1. John, son of John Mullings and Deborah his wife, was born 15/12/1758 and baptised in St Elizabeth, 11/1/1759 [Note: the father is probably misnamed in the register entry. William Mullings and Deborah his wife were parents of Deborah (bapt. 26/12/1754, aged 21 months) and William Thomas (born 18/08/1755; bapt. 08/06/1756), and the eldest son of John (1758-1821) was named William].

  2. Susannah Harriott Mullings, reputed daughter of John Mullings by Susannah Harriott, "both free Quadroons", born 17/01/1802 and baptised in St Elizabeth 13/05/1804.

  3. By Susanna Harriott (described as a free quadroon in 1804), he had the following reputed children, recorded as “not white” in their baptismal entries:

    . William Mullings: born 13/04/1790; bapt. 23/05/1790 - q.v.

    . Priscilla Mullings: born 30/06/1791; bapt. 22/04/1792 - q.v.

    . Montagu James Mullings: born 20/03/1793; bapt. 14/04/1793 - q.v.

    . Sophia Mullings: born 25/02/1795; bapt. 20/10/1799

    . John Mullings: born 07/09/1797; bapt. 20/10/1799 - q.v.

    . Deborah Caroline Mullings: born 17/03/1800; bapt. 16/08/1801 - q.v.

    . Susanna Harriott Mullings: born 17/01/1802; bapt. 13/05/1802 - q.v.

    . Henry Richard Mullings: born 24/01/1808; bapt. 24/01/1808; bapt. 14/10/1810

    . Theodore Mullings: born 03/09/1810; bapt. 14/10/1810.

  4. In 1815 there was found murdered, on Mr John Mullings’ land in St.Elizabeth, Eve “a negro belonging to Bellemont”, and the murder of Sweep, a missing "negro", was also suspected, the culprit being believed to be Moco George, belonging to Mr John Mullings.

  5. John Mullings Esquire was buried at Mount Pleasant, 21/02/1821 aged about 63.
