???? - 1805
London 'America and West Indies merchant', father of Edward Ellice, Robert Ellice, Russell Ellice, William Ellice, Alexander Ellice and probably Rev. James Ellice (each of whom q.v.). The firm reoriented towards American-Caribbean-European trade after 1783.
Will of Alexander Ellice of Bath Somerset proved 04/12/1805. The 'will' is in fact a tabulation 'in case of accident' of the allocation of real and personal assets to five named sons (the sixth son James received advowsons not included in the main table of assets), three named daughters and Alexander Ellice's wife, totalling £430,000. The first category is of assets designated for William Ellice, including estates in Demerary valued by Alexander Ellice the testator at £50,000, on the proviso he gave up his share of the 'house in Mark Lane', i.e. the London mercantile partnership.
Alexander Ellice has an entry in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography as 'merchant, shipowner, landowner and seigneur'.
