Biography

Second son of Sir Henry Stirling of Ardoch in Perthshire and his wife Anna nee Gordon. Succeeded as fifth baronet on the death of his brother William in 1799.

Army officer from 1757, saw active service in Canada (1758-1759), Martinique (1759), Havana (1762) and North America (1765-1767 and 1770-1780.

Bought Strowan estate near Crieff in Perthshire in 1794. Left his property to his nephew Thomas Graham (1768-1836), son of his sister Ann, with reversion to Graham's second son Thomas James Graham (1811-1896) who took the additional name of Stirling (some sources suggest that Thomas Graham 1768-1836 first took the name of Stirling).

At Edinburgh, 16/06/1808, trust deposition. Trustees to be Robert Sterling Esquire of Hampden in Jamaica, John Graham Esquire late of Jamaica now residing at Ardoch, Archibald Campbell of Clathick Esquire, advocate, William Erskine of Kinnedden Esquire, advocate and James Dundas, clerk to the signet.

Cash, stocks, annuities, household goods, land and heritable rent in Scotland and an estate in St Ann, Jamaica all placed in trust for Thomas Graham Esquire, my nephew, captain of the Windham, East Indiaman and his nearest heirs and assigns.

Proved in London 12/10/1808 by John Graham, Archibald Colquhoun (formerly Campbell), William Erskine and James Dundas.

Trustees to be Robert Stirling, John Graham, Archibald Campbell, William Erskine and James Dundas.
