Robert Hamilton Senior

1. In 1812, described as Robert Hamilton Senior of Hamilton [estate].

2. In 1825, described as the proprietor of Clifton Mount plantation, when John Clune, a white man, was prosecuted for harbouring the runaway enslaved man William Thompson.

3. Obituary notice: "On Tuesday. Robert Hamilton, senior, Esq., late of Hamilton's Estate, in the parish of St. Andrew, in which vicinity he resided for nearly 40 years; was 45 years in this island, and in the 67th year of his age. His unbounded hospitality, and universal generosity of heart, endeared him to many friends, who deeply appreciated his good qualities, and by whom, with members of his family, his death is deeply deplored. This Gentleman served in the American war, as an Officer, in the Royal North-Carolina Regiment of Foot. under Lord Cornwallis, and among his brother Officers signalized himself in the battle at Bunker's Hill. As a Magistrate of the parish of St. Andrew, he was upright in his duty, just to the complainant and aggressor. He was last Wednesday seized with fever, which, deplorable to add, carried him off to the inexpressible grief of his friends and relatives."

4. Robert Hamilton Junior (q.v.), presumably his son, was a merchant of Kingston. Robert Hamilton Jr. was deceased by 1817.

5. Robert Hamilton Senior has been tentatively identified as owner of Dowan estate in St George, Jamaica, until c. 1825 when he sold the enslaved people (and possibly the land) to the Earl of Balcarres. The enslaved people were moved to Balcarres estate.
