1770 - 1820
Owner of Russell Place, Hanbury and Vauxhall estates in Manchester, Jamaica, which be bequeathed to the children of his sister Sarah Maria Almond nee Russell. Included in the will were annuities to Ann Elizabeth Burton, "a free person of colour now residing with me" and her two children Sarah Maria Russell and Ann Elizabeth Russell.
Joseph Russell, son of Timothy Russell and his wife Sarah, was baptised in Nottingham, 22/10/1770. He died at Hounds Gate, Nottingham in early 1820, age 49.
Sarah Maria Russell, infant daughter of Joseph Russell esq of Russell Place in Clarendon and Ann Elizabeth Burton, a free woman of colour, of Plowden Plantation when the child was born in the parish of Vere, was baptised at Joseph Russell’s house in Clarendon, 22/09/1815. At the same time and in the same house was baptised Eliza, 5-year old daughter of Thomas John Branfoot (q.v.) of Newfield Plantation and Elizabeth Burton, a free woman of colour of Plowden Plantation, both in the parish of Vere. The baptisms are recorded in the Westmoreland register with a note that both children were of free condition. Presumably the mothers are the same person.
Elizabeth Russell, described simply as his daughter 'now residing in Nottingham' in his will, married a Nottingham lace-manufacturer John Hind in 1821, Robert White Almond conducted the ceremony. They were living at Cumberland Place, Nottingham, when their son John Russel[l] Hind was baptised 12/05/1823. John Russell Hind became a renowned astronomer: he has an entry in the ODNB and his photograph by Henry Joseph Whitlock is in the National Portrait Gallery.
