Biography

  1. Only child of Samuel Virgin of Hope and Bull Dead estates in Jamaica and his wife Sarah. Baptised in Clarendon in 1778. Married to William Murray who himself owned considerable 'slave-property'. Her father's estates in Jamaica were left in trust, the profits to be given to Elizabeth for her own use separate to that of her husband. Widowed by 1851 and living at 29 Brunswick Terrace in Hove, age 72, born Jamaica, with her grand-daughter Mary C. Floyd, 3 female servants and 2 male servants.

  2. Living in Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square in London in 1834.

  3. The will of Elizabeth Murray, widow of Brunswick Terrace, Brighton, was proved in London in 1857. Her first legacy was of the portrait of her (the testator) by Sir Thomas Lawrence, which she left to her daughter Hon. Dame Sarah Joanna Webster, wife of Sir Godfrey Webster. Among other monetary legacies she left £5000 to her grandson Edward William Bonham.
