William Paul Austin

1798 - ????

Biography

Slave-owner in Surinam, son of Rev. Richard Austin (q.v.) and half-brother of Rev. Wiltshire Stanton Austin (also q.v). In 1848 at the age of 50 he married in Surinam Georgiana Augusta Robinson, born at Holbeach, the daughter of Joseph Robinson and Hannah Keen. In 1863 he claimed compensation of 30.600 guilders for his 7/24th share of the 102 enslaved people (the claim was for 106 people) on Plantation Kleinhoop, Surinam (which gave him as of Pln Catherina Sophia). He also claimed as creditor against several Surinam slave-owners. A claim was made 03/11/1862 on his behalf for the 127 enslaved people on Plantation Pomona, but the 35,700 guilders in compensation was paid to Dominic[k] John Connely O'Ferrall (q.v.), who appears to have purchased the plantation between November 1862 and 10 July 1863.
