John Chambers was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 582 acres of land in St Catherine, 888 acres in Westmoreland and 790 acres in St Thomas-in-the-Vale, total 2260 acres.
Chambers and Pinto were listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 500 acres of land in Hanover. This may refer to Edward Chambers, Ephraim Chambers, Jacob Chambers, John Chambers or William Chambers (all q.v.), all of whom owned land in Jamaica at this time.
John Chambers of St Catherine, planter. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1754. Slave-ownership at probate: 39 of whom 23 were listed as male and 16 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £6995.88 Jamaican currency of which £1813 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £371.66 currency cash, £4072.67 currency debts and £5 currency plate.
Presumably related to the John Chambers of Hanover whose estate was probated in 1771. The two John Chambers have not been differentiated. John Chambers of Hanover, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1771. Slave-ownership at probate: 353 of whom 184 were listed as male and 169 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £26173.11 Jamaican currency of which £21391 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £344.95 currency debts and £0 currency plate. Given the large slave-holding of this John Chambers it seems more likely that he is the one who owned 2260 acres in Jamaica in 1754.
