Samuel Adams

Slave-owner in Jamaica, owner of Nutfield (St Mary) and Riverhead (St David). Shown in the Accounts Produce to have died 21/07/1772. A London merchant of the same name died c. 1772, but was dead by March of that year. 'Miss Adams' of London married James Godsell (q.v.) of Limerick, shown as owner of Riverhead in 1786-1787, in 1763.

Samuel Adams was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 150 acres of land in St Catherine, 900 acres in St Andrew, 950 acres in St David, 1310 acres in St George, 903 acres in St Mary and 1240 acres in St James, total 5453 acres.

Samuel Adams was listed as owner of Cold Spring in St Andrew in 1753 with 446 acres of land and 27 enslaved people.

Samuel Adams of Kingston, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1773. Slave-ownership at probate: 356 of whom 207 were listed as male and 149 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £29732.89 Jamaican currency of which £16514.75 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £309.75 currency cash, £4985.53 currency debts and £110 currency plate.
