Charles Browne

???? - 1795

Biography

  1. Owner of Swansea estate at least 1790 until his death in 1795. Although given as of Great Britain in the Accounts Produce, Browne appears to have been resident at the time he made his will. The will of Charles Browne dated 04/05/1795, witnessed by men giving 'Swansea' as their address, and proved 03/08/1795 at London, was very simple, making his wife Lucy Browne his universal legatee. Although the identification remains tentative, this appears to be Charles Browne of Marchwiel Hall, the will of whose widow Lucy was proved in 1832, and the same man as Charles Browne of Reigate who was the heir of William Patrick Browne in 1789. Mrs Lucy Browne sold Marchwiel Hall in 1801 to another Jamaica slave-owner, Samuel Riley (q.v.).

  2. Charles Browne of Brownes Lodge in Reigate, Surrey, was one of the executors of William Peat of Jamaica, will written on his passage to Jamaica in 1791. William Peat died on a visit to Marchwiel Hall in December 1792.
