William Thornton of the City of London

Biography

William Thornton appears as a second-wave holder of land in Dominica c. 1777, 'present proprietor' of St John Lots nos. 20, 21, 24 & 25 totalling 330 acres and St Joseph Lot no. 80 (300 acres), three of which had been purchased originally by Gen. [George] Leonard Staunton, and of a further 12 acres on lease in St John. This was presumably the same William Thornton as the man of the City of London who was executor of the will of John Woodville (q.v.) of 1776. To date he has not been further traced in London. A William Thornton of London took the additional name of Astell in 1777, and died in 1801: however, he has so far not been tied to property in Dominica.
