Biography

  1. First son and heir of Peter Heywood and his wife Grace Drake, nee Modyford. Baptised 1684/5 in St Andrew. Member of Assembly 1708-1722. Purchased Maristow in Devon, England. Died 01/02/1738. Father of James Modyford Heywood of Maristow.

  2. James Heywood of St Mary, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1740. Slave-ownership at probate: 232 of whom 126 were listed as male and 106 as female. 67 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £7687.13 Jamaican currency of which £4927 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £0 currency debts and £0 currency plate.

  3. James Heywood, deceased was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 200 acres of land in St Catherine, 80 acres in St Andrew, 168 acres in St Thomas-in-the-East, 3711 acres in St Mary, 80 acres in Vere, 12 acres in St Dorothy and 1360 acres in St Thomas-in-the-Vale, total 5611 acres.
