Gibbons Gale then Sergeant (née Morant)

Biography

  1. Numerous online sources give Gibbons Gale born 1716, the daughter of John Morant II (q.v.) and his wife Elizabeth nee Gibbons although no baptism has been found for her in Vere or Clarendon. Later the wife of Jonathan Gale III of Fullerswood who she married in Clarendon 28/06/1733.

  2. Five children were baptised to Jonathan and Gibbons Gale: Eleanor (baptised in St Andrew 1734, she later married Francis Coke and was dead by 1764); Col. Henry Gale (1737-1767, of Salt Springs, MA for St Elizabeth 1760, 1765-1766); Jonathan (born 16/1/1737/8 and baptised in St Andrew 22/2/1737/8; dead by 1747 when a private Act of the Jamaican legislature described Henry, supra, as his father’s only son and heir); Morant (twin with Jonathan; bapt. at same time); Gibbons (born 10/05/1739 and baptised in Vere 22/06/1739, described as her father’s posthumous dauughter, “Miss Gibbons Gale” was buried at Vere 04/07/1761).

  3. At some point between 1739 and 1751 she married Peter Sergeant. Edward Peter, son of Peter Sergeant of Fullerswood Esquire and Gibbons, his wife, born 17/11/1751 and baptised 03/08/1752 in St Elizabeth.

  4. Gibbons Gale and Peter Sergeant had overdue quit rent bonds of £659 in October 1747.

  5. Gibbons Gale was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 600 acres of land in St Elizabeth.
