Esther Dias Fernandes

Biography

Slave-owner in Kingston, Jamaica, from at least 1817 to 1823. Deceased by 1826. Her executor was David Dias Fernandes and two other heirs were Rachel and Sarah Dias Fernandes (all q.v.).

  1. A related woman of the same name was the wife of Jacob Dias Fernandes (q.v.) and the mother of David, Sarah and Rachel. This second Esther Dias Fernandes is probably the Esther Dias, age 88, gentlewoman, born Jamaica, living in Whitechapel in the census of 1851 with her children Rebecca Dias age 70, David Dias age 66, Sarah Aguilar age 64, Rachel Dias age 59 and two female servants. She died in Whitechapel, Q4 1852.

  2. Memorial inscription in North Street Cemetery, Kingston: "Here lieth the body of Jacob Dias Fernandas, the dutiful, obedient and beloved son of Isaac and Esther Dias Fernandes, who departed this life on Saturday the 26th day of October, 1805. Aged 18 years 9 months and 14 days." Death of Esther Fernandes, widow of Isaac D. 30/12/1825 in Jamaica.
