Thomas Alison Scott

1777 - 1881

Biography

Thomas Alison Scott has an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography as 'sugar pioneer', which shows him as the son of Thomas Scott merchant and his wife Elizabeth Rhodey, and training with his uncle Thomas Rhodey of Liverpool. It appears likely that his uncle was the slave-trader Thomas Rodie (q.v.): the entry goes on to say: 'In 1797 he went to Antigua where he managed his father's estate for several years. After visiting sugar plantations in Louisiana he called at Sydney about 1816 on his way to Calcutta. Impressed with the potential of New South Wales for sugar growing, Scott decided to stay.' The estate of Thomas Scott on Antigua has not yet been identified.
