Charles Mellish

1736 - 1796

Biography

English land-owner, MP and annuitant on Iter Boreale in St George Jamaica.

  1. The will of Charles Mellish of Blyth Nottinghamshire was proved 04/08/1798. The will deals mainly with the transmission of property in England, but included his bequest to his wife for life and her assigns an annuity of £100 p.a. to which he was entitled for the life of his son Joseph Charles Mellish payable out of the estate of Iter Boreale in Jamaica; after her death or marriage it was to pass to his son Henry Francis Mellish. He left to his wife all arrears of this annuity and the sums of money due to him from the Iter Boreal estate representing legal expenses he incurred in pursuing his claim on the estate.

  2. Nottingham University Library, Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections, includes among its holdings of the Papers of the Mellish Family of Hodsock, Nottinghamshire a set of papers described as 'Letters from Messrs Mackay and Co., and others to Tobias Stapleton and Charles Mellish and accounts concerning the Iter Boreale Estate in Jamaica' which appear to concern the annuity on the estate and are dated between 1776 and 1793. The will of Joseph Charles Mellish, on whose life the annuity was written, was proved 12/01/1824: in it he was described as 'HM Agent and Consul General in the Circle of Lower Saxony and...Hamburg, Bremen and Lubeck.'
