William Ramsay

William Ramsay had a lease of the Chancery Court Registry from 1787 and still held it at his death in 1823 (William Ramsay esq, Registrar of the Court of Chancery, buried at St Catherine 06/05/1823). He was of Spanish Town and married there “lately” according to The Times of 09/09/1789, Elizabeth Burberry Gordon, daughter of Larchin Gordon (q.v.); she died at Spanish Town, 18/08/1820, “after a short but painful illness” (Morning Post, 03/11/1820); their children were:

. Elizabeth Burberry: born 07/04/1790 and baptised 14/09/1790; married Major Campbell, 9th Native infantry, Bengal, and died 16/05/1826 en route from the East Indies to London (Royal Gazette of Jamaica, 28/10/1826)

. George: born 15/07/1792 and baptised 19/08/1792

. Jane: born 17/08/1794 and baptised 25/11/1794; married, 1817, her cousin, Capt. George Antoine Ramsay, eldest son of Major-General George William Ramsay, Governor of Antigua (Royal Gazette of Jamaica, 05/07/1817); he, described as late Major, 77th Regt., died at Hill Lodge, Enfield, Middlesex, 10/12/1852, aged 60 (Morning Advertiser, 16/12/1852; the memorial inscription in St Andrew’s churchyard, Enfield, says in his 60th year, and makes him a Knight of Hanover: findagrave.com memorial ID 34307747); his daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Gordon Ramsay died at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, aged 22, 18/1/1844 (Hampshire Chronicle, 20/01/1844; St James’s Chronicle, 23/01/1844)

William Ramsay, of Spanish Town: born 15/11/1796 and baptised 18/12/1796; Master in Chancery; Custos of St.Catherine, 1841; by his wife Mary Lloyd Gordon he had: Gordon Duberry [sic], born at Dawkins Pen 28/03/1831 and baptised there 27/04/1831 (per affidavit of Robert Cargill of St Catherine, esq, 1848); William Grovener, baptised 27/04/1833; Paulus, born 25/01/1835 and baptised 16/03/1835; Ulick Otto, born 30/01/1837 and baptised 22/03/1837; Louisa Anne, born 10/04/1839 and baptised 12/06/1839; Mary Blizard Wilhelmina, privately baptised 08/03/1841, aged 11 days

. George: born 22/01/1799 and baptised 09/05/1799

. Edward: born 04/10/1800 and baptised 23/12/1800

. Marianne : born 27/06/1802 and baptised 10/05/1803

. Charlotte: born 08/09/1804 and baptised 22/11/1804; married, 25/03/1824, Robert Cargill esq

. Harriet (baptism not found): described as daughter of William Ramsay esq when she married William Duncan esq, attorney at law, 18/03/1824 (a week before Charlotte)
