From a slave-owning family on Antigua, and then of South Carolina, and the subject of a number of pieces of scholarship based on her surviving papers, including most recently Lorri Glover, Eliza Lucas Pinckney: an independent woman in the Age of Revolution (Yale, 2020), which gives brief background on the family in Antigua.

Jamaican-born widow of a prominent slave-owner; resident in Britain following the death of her husband in 1818. Accused - and acquitted - of the cruel treatment of some enslaved people whom she brought to Britain with her.

A cover note outlining the contents of the document.
