Colonel in the Coldstream Guards and owner of the Retreat estate. He was also a trustee of the wedding settlement of Col. Farquharson and Miss Nasmyth, where he appears as Col. Robert Bowen of the Coldstream Guards (given apparently erroneously as Joseph Robert Bowen in the Parliamentary Papers).

  1. Will of Robert Bowen formerly of the Retreat estate and Dunluce Pen Montego Bay Jamaica but late of Valetta Island of Malta who died at Valetta 04/06/1874 proved 19/09/1874 by Robert Bowen the nephew Deputy Surgeon-General in the Army, effects £1500. A memorial in Ta'braxia Churchyard identifies him as aged 77 retired Lt-Colonel late of the Coldstream Guards, born in Jamaica.

Sources

T71/873 St James claim no. 554 for the Retreat; T71/856 St Mary claim no. 144A for the trusteeship. For Retreat, the Jamaica Almanacs show 'Robert Bowen' from 1811 to 1826, Robert and Richard L. Bowen 1828, Richard L. Bowen in 1829, Richard L. Bowen deceased in 1831 and 1832, and Robert Bowen in 1833, indicating a change of generation. The Robert Bowen who appears under Thomas Nasmyth's will as the guardian of Robert Nasmyth in 1817 (see Mary Sarah Nasmyth's entry) must be the father of Colonel Bowen, who then inherited responsibilities towards the family.
