Biography

Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on what were reported to be two separate estates on St Kitts, Ottley and Ottleys. She was also a beneficiary of the compensation for the Marble Hill estate in Antigua under the will of her sister Sarah Willett Hooker (nee Ottley) who had died in 1812.

  1. Death of Martha Fleming Ottley registered New Forest Hampshire Q4 1846. Will of Martha Fleming Ottley spinster of Testwood Hampshire proved 11/01/1847. In the will (made in 1827) she said 'I have scarcely any property except annuities for life' but went on to confirm the indentures of 1822 by which she had settled her interest in 'certain estates, plantations, negroes, slaves, mules' on the Rev. Charles Hyde Wollaston of East Dereham in Norfolk. The Rev. Charles Hyde Wollaston (q.v.) had married a Sarah Willett Ottley in 1795, almost certainly the niece of Martha Fleming Ottley.

  2. Martha Fleming was the daughter of William Ottley of Hengrave Suffolk (d. 1774) and grand-daughter of Drewry Ottley of St Kitts. Her sisters included Elizabeth of Testwood (will proved 17/08/1826), Sarah Willett, who married Thomas Hooker and died 14/12/1812,  and Edith, who married Gilbert Franckyln (q.v.). She died a spinster 08/11/1846 aged 98.
