Biography

Of Liverpool in the 1820s. Son of Thomas Slater of Liverpool (q.v.). Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on the Queensbury estate on St Vincent, which in 1817 had been registered to Thomas Slater of Liverpool but by 1822 had been transferred to Leonard Slater and others. No trace found of mercantile activity has been found for him in the London Gazette.

  1. Leonard, born 09/11/1780 and baptised 09/12/1780 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, son of Mr Thomas Slater. Married Ann Grimshaw of Halifax, 15/07/1811 at St John the Baptist, Wakefield. Three children baptised at Bolton-le-Moors: Leonard (1813), Harriet (1816) and Elizabeth Jane (1817), father's abode Little Boton and occupation 'manufacturer'. Living at Aigburth 1823 and 1825; described as 'gentleman 1827'.

  2. Leonard Slater died aged 77 22/01/1858 Southport Lancashire; death registered Ormskirk Q1 1858. Will of Leonard Slater formerly of Rockferry County of Chester, late of Southport, who died 22/01/1858 proved 19/03/1858, effects under £7000. One of the executors was his son Rev. Leonard Slater of Belmont near Bangor Carnavonshire.

  3. Will of Thomas Slater of Liverpool proved 06/02/1818. Under the will he left his two estates on St Vincent known as Queensbury estate or plantation and the Vermont estate in trust [the trustees were his daughter Mary, sons Silas and Leonard and nephew Mark Whyte of Barrow Hill, Staffs.], for the benefit as to 3/8ths to his son Silas, 2/8ths each to his sons Anthony and Leonard, and 1/8th between his daughters Joyce and Mary. He gave permission for the sale of the estates but sought to limit the sale of the shares in them outside the family. He left two further sons Robert and Adam annuities of £300 p.a. each payable from his personalty.
