Biography

Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on the Calder Hall estate on Tobago, which he had inherited under the will of George Douglas (who died in 1833). Brother of James Douglas Stoddart Douglas (ne James Douglas Stoddart) (q.v.) whose wife was the main beneficiary of George Douglas' will.

  1. 'Major George Douglas Stoddart (1793-21 January 1839), an officer in the Bengal Light Cavalry, was 'forced from India by failing health' and died at Stellenbosch. His brother paid for the tablet which was probably the work of the London sculptor William Pistell. There is a fragment of marble in the undercroft with Pistell's signature which probably came off this monument. Dickson Burnies and Company obtained permission to erect it in May 1842.'
