According to the Hicks Family Tree on Ancestry, Richard Thomas Smitten was resident in St Thomas, Barbados until 1834 and possibly thereafter. But by 1850 he was living in the United States at Williamsburg, Kings, New York; and died in 1860 in Porta Plata, Santo Domingo.
